I’m A Reader Not A Writer presents: Virtual Book Tour:

Begin Again by Brittney Mulliner

BLURB: Escaping her past, Aubrey Tate moves to Southern California for a fresh start with her older brother, Brandon. Starting over at a new school seems easy with her cousin, Mckayla, and her two best friends at her side, but handling the new guys is another matter. Aubrey ends up in the middle of three rivals that each want her to themselves. Mike claims her first and declare himself her friend and protector. Luke is the school heartthrob that stops Aubrey in her tracks, speechless. Gage is the mysterious, dark outsider that Aubrey can be herself around. How will she navigate her new life while she’s still haunted by her past?

I invited Brittney for an interview and she graciously agreed to it.

Brittney, thank you for stopping by my blog. Tell us what’s a day in the life of author Brittney Mulliner.

Since I’m finishing my last semester of my undergrad I’m pretty busy. I have another ‘real’ job that takes up most of my time PLUS school PLUS getting my book out PLUS getting my second one written PLUS trying to have a life and say hi to my husband. It’s a crazy time right now, but I love it. I thrive off being busy, although my grades are the ones that suffer the consequences. My days usually go something like: gym, school, work, write, homework…sleep? Repeat.

I get easily distracted therefore when I write I need complete silence, door closed. The only person allowed in my office is Bella, my dog. When you write do you need complete silence around you or noise?

I love that your dog is your person. I’m a dog lover as well. I can’t handle many distractions (TV or other people) but I must have music. I have the Sara Bareilles Pandora station so customized to my taste that I can turn it on and zone out for hours writing and not realize it.

I have all these ideas and voices in my head, but for some reason I struggle sometimes to put them on the paper. Do you find yourself at one point or another at a loss for words?

Sometimes I finish a scene or thought that flowed out so naturally then I stop and stare at the screen as it taunts me. The most intimidating thing is a blank page or a new chapter. I’ll sit staring at the screen or the wall for minutes (or more) trying to come up with something. It’s the worst!

How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?

It became public while I was on my way to work, so I bought breakfast for myself and my manager and we had a mini celebration including a lot of jumping up and down and squealing!

What hobbies do you have?

The only thing I really have (or make) time for is going to the gym. It doubles as my reading time since I bring my kindle to read while I do cardio. Hopefully once I graduate I can get back into crafts and sewing, but I’ll probably just write more.

I’m not identifying myself with any of my characters, yet each one of them has a part of me. Can you see yourself in any of your characters? Which one and why?

My friends that have read it have told me they definitely see my sense of humor and sarcasm in Aubrey, my main character. I didn’t necessarily plan that but it’s hard to avoid putting part of yourself into the story.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?

Write for the love of writing. This process isn’t easy or for the faint of heart, so do it for yourself and the stories you have to tell.

What has been the toughest criticism you’ve been given as an author? What has been the best component?

I was told by one of my beta readers that basically everything about the book was wrong. The characters were unrealistic as was the plot, etc. For every bad critic there is a positive one. I’ve learned that I’m not going to please everyone and not every reader will love my stories, but there are people that love it and I’ll keep writing for them.

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?

I was admittedly late on the ebook bandwagon because I refused to give up my paperbacks. My friend converted me last year and now I would never go back. My kindle doesn’t leave my side. No matter where I go I have it in my purse/backpack. It’s so convenient to have all my books with me and I love being able to bookmark and highlight things.

What projects are you working on and when should we expect another release? In a few words what is this story about.

I’m participating in NANOWRIMO this year and I’ll be writing the second book to the series. We’re going to find out more about Aubrey’s stalker and there will be more romance in this book. I’m planning for it to be out early next year. I have a notebook with 11 or 12 stories I have outlined and planned, so I’ll be working on those after the Begin Again series is done.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck on your writing journey!
