Review–THE COMPANION by Susan Squires

4 Sep

I rarely post reviews and when I do it it’s because the book is really deserving. Today I give you THE COMPANION by Susan Squires.

susan

I had the pleasure of meeting Susan during the Arizona Dreamin’ Romance Reader Event end of May. We clicked instantly, having tremendous fun talking writing, publishing and the likes.

When I travelled to California last month, I met Susan for a cup of coffee and three hours later we still had so much to talk about. She gifted me two books, one of them being THE COMPANION. If I were to describe the novel using one word and one word only it must be: hooking. I enjoyed the book so much so that I decided to post a review which went live on Goodreads and Amazon already and B&N soon, but for now here it is in all its splendor.

For those of you curious about the person behind the novel, I’m happy to inform you that Susan will be my guest next week with an interview. At that point I’ll have a giveaway going along with the interview. More to come. Until then enjoy my take on THE COMPANION.

My review:

For as long as I remember I didn’t care much for vampires. Maybe because I grew up with them in the land of Dracula (for real). Maybe because a certain vampire totally blew it for me using his superpowers to stalk/watch/control his GF.

All of that changed when I began reading The Companion by Susan Squires and was introduced to Ian Rufford. Oh my! The more I read the more I wanted to find out about him. Tortured and damaged yet strong and with a sense of dignity, Ian managed to redeem for me the entire world of vampires and for that I’m deeply grateful to Susan Squires.
I found Elizabeth Rochewell, the heroine really easy to relate to: uncomplicated, realistic, she won me over with her unassuming nature. Life hasn’t always been easy for her but she doesn’t complain nor expects people to feel sorry for her.
Events bring Ian and Elizabeth in the same place at the same time and, as much as they try to resist being in each other’s company, there is only so much space one can hide on a ship. When things begin to go wrong at every turn, Ian loses control and does something he can help but loathe himself for.
There’s much more to the story than their relationship: there’s mystery, complications, surprises and a fast pace that keeps you on your toes, reading one page after another and as soon as you think you have it figured it out, there it comes: the bomb.
I applaud Susan Squires’ ability to create fascinating characters, intricate storyline and great pacing.

Needless to say Susan Squires’ portraying of vampires during the regency left me curious and yearning for more, so much so that the entire series (6 novels to be exact) are now in my library, waiting for me to discover their treasures.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Polar Opposites

Polar Opposites: Super Villain Academy #2

The supers are balanced. Academies have altered their curriculum to teach both sides of the super power spectrum. All’s well in the super world. Right?

When Mystic kidnaps Oceanus, Jeff learns it isn’t all right. Turning to the newly balanced supers for assistance, he panics to find they’ve done nothing to rescue Oceanus. When no ransom request follows, he worries Mystic’s plan never included returning his girlfriend. Frustrated, he’s forced to work with the only super willing to help. Oceanus’ ex-villain, ex-boyfriend, Set.

Mystic isn’t the only one hiding something. Nothing about Jeff is balanced. Temper flares result in scorched clothing or flying furniture, and his charm has become an indiscriminating people-magnet.

Jeff is convinced, or maybe just hopeful, that his lack of control is directly related to Oceanus being gone. But will he and Set find her before Jeff loses control completely and will they find her alive?

They never talked about how they ended the world. Twice. Jeff glanced at Oceanus, bent over her phone in the passenger seat of his car. A curtain of black hair shielded her profile from view, but he thought he saw her smile.

He reached over and tucked her hair behind an ear. Yep, she was smiling. So was he. He felt his skin heat, but not as a side-effect of his super power ability to create fire. This heat was due to thoughts of Oci running her small warm hands down his back and tilting her face up to accept his kiss.

“ How about a movie?” Oceanus asked.

“ Which one?” Jeff replied, scanning the traffic and then his girlfriend.

Oci’s thin arms, delicate wrists, and bird-like legs that barely reached the floorboards, all gave the impression she needed protection and caring for. Whereas, with her super strength, she could lift the car they drove in onto two wheels if someone were trapped underneath.

“ Oh, perfect!” Oceanus flung her hair over her shoulder and straightened in her seat. Her smile illuminated Jeff’s peripheral vision as he concentrated on traffic. “The one I want to see starts in forty-five minutes. That gives us plenty of time to get there, get popcorn and some good seats, and watch the previews. I love the previews, don’t you?”

Jeff glanced at her again. The devilish glint in her eye made him frown. “What movie?”

Oceanus peeked through thick black lashes. Jeff was pretty sure she even batted them a bit. “What movie, Oci?”

“ Accidental Hero.” At Jeff’s groan, Oceanus chuckled. “Come on, you have to admit the storyline looks kinda familiar. Besides, the special effects look amazing. You love that crap.”

Jeff stared at the traffic and said nothing. He knew it was useless. He could mount the best argument against seeing the movie, but Oceanus always got her way. Cursing his Oceanus-shaped soft spot, he turned at the next intersection and headed toward the theater.

The whiny guitar tones of the heavy metal song Super Villain erupted from his cell phone. He looked at the display and saw Mother’s number. “Can you answer that?”

Reaching for his phone, Oceanus said, “You know, now that we aren’t technically super villains anymore, you should consider changing your ringtone.”

King of Bad

King of Bad: Super Villain Academy #1

Jeff Mean would rather set fires than follow rules or observe curfew. He wears his bad boy image like a favorite old hoodie; that is until he learns he has superpowers and is recruited by Super Villain Academy – where you learn to be good at being bad. In a school where one kid can evaporate all the water from your body and the girl you hang around with can perform psychic sex in your head, bad takes on a whole new meaning. Jeff wonders if he’s bad enough for SVA.

He may never find out. Classmates vilify him when he develops good manners. Then he’s kidnapped by those closest to him and left to wonder who is good and who is bad. His rescue is the climactic episode that balances good and evil in the super world. The catalyst – the girl he’s crushing on. A girlfriend and balancing the Supers is good, right? Or is it…bad?

The Inspiration for Shadow Fire

They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Well, I am a video game addict. More specifically, I’m addicted to RPGs. I spend an inordinate amount of time immersed in one fantasy world or another. My characters would be right at home alongside the characters from Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, or The Legend of Zelda. I label Shadow Fire as a fantasy romance, but it is also an adventure.

Music is a huge force in my inspiration for characters and plots. Certain songs just have an overall feel that transports me to the world I’m creating. The Wall by Kansas was a driving force behind the beginning chapters of Shadow Fire. Celtic music helped me picture the fantasy world I was going for—my favorite was The Mummers’ Dance by Loreena McKennitt. During revisions I stumbled upon Aliveby Adelitas Way, which I consider Ashlyn and Zane’s unofficial theme song.

When the idea for Shadow Fire hit, it hit hard. One day I hadn’t written anything for several years and the next I cranked out the first chapter in a couple of hours. I was obsessed. There was no plot mapping, no outline. Zane, Ashlyn, and Taranis were in my mind, and I needed to free them as quickly as possible or risk insanity. The first draft was written in four weeks. That was two years ago. While the plot and characters remain the same, the manuscript has undergone numerous revisions to reach the place it is today. I changed the beginning twice, then finally found what I liked on the third try.

Shadow Fire is my debut novel. I learned so much about writing during this journey. You can clearly see it if you compare the first manuscript with the published novel. It’s an amazing difference. Fortunately, I love editing and revising. It’s hard to say goodbye to your characters when that final revision is complete. Ashlyn, Zane, and Taranis have a cameo in Stolen Moon the second book in the Light Chronicles due out in August.

She is married to her soul mate, has a teenage son, and shares her home with three dogs and four cats. No, she doesn’t live on a farm, she just loves animals. Her house is filled with dragons, though she does lament that they are the porcelain, non-flying variety.

Kimber Leigh is addicted to romance, videogames, superheroes, villains, and chocolate—not necessarily in that order. (If she has to choose, she’ll take a chocolate covered superhero!)

Her debut novel, Shadow Fire, is the first book in The Light Chronicles series. Watch for book two, Stolen Moon, a standalone sequel, coming soon.

Guest Post–My Relationship With Romance

My love affair with romance has stayed strong and developed over decades. It started, of course, with Disney princesses. Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty. I loved watching them find their princes (still do). Even better… as I’ve grown up, the princesses have too. The prince now has to earn his princess’s love and trust – not just ride in on a white horse. And sometimes, it’s a sister’s love that saves the day, not a man’s.

When I hit about twelve or so, I realized that the stacks of books in my mother’s bookshelf were all romances – mostly historical… Georgette Hyer, Jane Smith, Marion Chesney. Mom wrote – on the inside cover of each book – the age at which I was allowed to read it based on the content.  Now, in those days, the racier content still wasn’t all that racy. Things have changed a bit. Lol. I went through all of my mom’s books pretty fast and wanted more.

Then I bought a stack of old romances from a used book store and fell in love with contemporary romance. Still the older stuff, mostly from the 70s – Betty Neels, Kerry Allyne, Dorothy Cork, Sheila Douglas. The stories then were sweeter, more innocent. I still love those authors, and buy their books from used bookstores whenever I find them. Just recently, I was thrilled to find that Kerry Allyne’s books are now digital on Amazon. Good thing too, because I’m on my 4th copy of Summer Rainfall. I keep rereading it until the pages fall out of the binding.

The older contemporaries led to the new contemporaries starting when I was in High School – Penny Jordan, Sandra Marton, Miranda Lee, Emma Darcy, Katherine Spencer. I read some of their first books, and many of those authors are still writing today. The women got more independent, and the men changed from domineering to commanding. (Yes there’s a difference.) I still read contemps regularly. These days, the love scenes are more explicit. (Not that I mind. Haha.)

It’s only in the last five years or so that I’ve added the paranormal romance category to my relationship with romance. When I’d looked for this type of book in the past, the stories were cheesy or mostly about the paranormal or science fiction plot line. But these days, more and more authors are writing these interesting worlds with wonderful romance added in. Does it get any better?

It’s been 25 years or so and I’m still reading great books and authors. Who doesn’t love to just escape into a story with strong heroines, alpha males, sassy exchanges, a growing connection, and, eventually, a happy ending. I think I’ll be 95 and still in love with romance.

What got you started?

Amy Holman Edelman launched IndieReader, the essential consumer guide to self-published books and the people who write them, way back in 2007. Since then, indie authors have stormed the bestseller lists, been courted by trad publishers and (after all that), finally gained a modicum of respect.

Amy self-published her first book, The Fashion Resource Directory, back in the 80s, long before POD and Amazon and e-readers roamed the land. Her second and third books (The Little Black Dress and Manless in Montclair), were traditionally published (by Simon & Schuster and Shaye Areheart Books, an imprint of Crown).

As an author and a publicist with over 20 years’ experience, Amy’s goal for IndieReader is no less than to make indie a respected and desirable category within the publishing world. This book is just one step in that direction.

Website * Twitter * Facebook * Twitter

Excerpt

From the Introduction of Indie Authors Naked by Amy Edelman:

IndieReader was launched in ‘07, otherwise known as the dark days of self-publishing. Back then, every book was considered a vanity publication, every author a failed writer. Denial ran so high that when the self-pubbed book, Her Last Letter by Nancy C. Johnson hit The New York Times bestseller list, the good folks at the NYT were still saying that they’d never include one! And then there was The Shack, another indie that snuck through the gauntlet to appear on the NYTimes list for an astounding 172 weeks between June 2008 to early 2010 (52 of those weeks at #1).

Flash forward to 2012-2013. With the advent of ebooks, the publishing landscape has completely and irrevocably changed. Bowker, the ISBN people, recently reported that the number of self-published books in 2012 rose 59% over 2011, growing to over 391,000 titles in 2012. That’s a lot of indie.

But it’s not just availability that has changed the notion of what a self-pubbed book can be. Either the whole “vanity” thing was propaganda on the part of trad publishing—after all, Virginia Woolf famously did it with Hogarth Press—or publishing ebooks makes it easier for talented writers to get their work seen. Either way, over the last couple of years—beginning with the high-profile snagging of Amanda Hocking—at least 50 indie authors (many of them interviewed in this very book) have been courted and won by traditional publishers.

Did these authors’ books change from when they were self-pubbed to when they became trads? Or did their appearance on the bonafide bestseller lists (The New York Times, USA Today) just make it easier for the Big 5 to spot them? Not that getting picked up by a traditional publisher is always an indie author’s end-game. In fact, a recent survey conducted by The Bookseller noted that only about one-third of the self-published authors surveyed stated that they would consider a traditional book deal. That’s a lot of authors who aren’t willing to trade the freedom of creation for the chance to have their works packaged by committee.

So whether an author decides to sell their work to a trad publisher or not—it is clear that indies are here to stay. Their books resonate with readers who really couldn’t give a damn if they came through the hallowed halls of a traditional publisher or just via their ereaders. The indie writing community is strong and getting stronger, as are the options for placing their books (been to your local bookstore lately? You may be surprised at the titles you find on the shelves).

Yes, dear readers, this time—thanks to technology and changing perceptions—self-publishing is clearly here to stay. And via interviews and essays, Indie Authors Naked aims to highlight the best of the best.
