Can Annie, a romantic at heart, find love online or will she find love at first sight the old-fashioned way, by awkward, chance meetings with Shane Nicholls? Through a number of obstacles and heartache, Annie and Shane find that love at first sight really does exist if you truly believe.

Excerpt:

Johnny’s was packed. Standing on line to place her order, Annie took in her surroundings. Just as the owner, Johnny, was coming over to take her order, something caught Annie’s eye. The guy near the window, he seemed familiar somehow. Where had she seen him before? He was eating dinner with a pretty brunette. He lifted his head to look at Annie as their eyes locked. On no! It was the guy from the mall, the one she bumped into. She quickly spun around, knocking right into the waitress who was carrying a tray of soft drinks.
Soda soaked her shirt and dripped onto the floor. The waitress was clearly annoyed and appeared like she would have loved to tell Annie off. Instead she rolled her eyes and ran to get a towel. If Annie thought she was embarrassed before, it was nothing compared to how she felt now. Every eye in the place was on her, including the guy from the mall. Helpless to do anything else, she grabbed some napkins and bent down to sop up some of the mess.
“It seems you have a knack for causing a scene everywhere you go.” It was his voice. The voice that filled her head with inappropriate thoughts, with longing. What was she thinking? Did she dare look up? His gaze was a magnet, forcing her to meet his eyes.
His eyes were a warmer brown than she had remembered, drawing her in.
“I…uh…”
“I’m joking. Here, let me help you with that.” He grabbed the napkins from her hand. The heat between them jolted her back. She moved quickly, surprised he could evoke such a reaction from her. Nobody had ever made her feel so exposed before. What was going on here? Annie felt foolish.
“I’m Shane. Shane Nicholls.” He extended his hand to her. They must have appeared to be quite the sight, bending over to clean up the mess while shaking hands.
“Annie.” Annie remembered her new rules of safety in the dating world. One of them was she would not reveal her last name or any other personal information until she was sure the guy wasn’t a stalker or anything.
“Annie. It suits you, I like it.” Annie had almost forgot about the woman waiting for Shane at the table near the window. She glanced over and took in a tight-lipped woman. It hit Annie that this woman was not the same stunning woman from the mall. Hmm, she had met his type before. This guy had “player” written all over him. She quickly brushed herself off and excused herself.
“Hey, Annie. Wait.” He reached for her hand. Annie forgot all about placing her order and made a beeline for the door. She didn’t look back. Well, Annie figured, it looked like it would be Chinese food tonight.

The Inspiration for Shadow Fire

They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Well, I am a video game addict. More specifically, I’m addicted to RPGs. I spend an inordinate amount of time immersed in one fantasy world or another. My characters would be right at home alongside the characters from Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, or The Legend of Zelda. I label Shadow Fire as a fantasy romance, but it is also an adventure.

Music is a huge force in my inspiration for characters and plots. Certain songs just have an overall feel that transports me to the world I’m creating. The Wall by Kansas was a driving force behind the beginning chapters of Shadow Fire. Celtic music helped me picture the fantasy world I was going for—my favorite was The Mummers’ Dance by Loreena McKennitt. During revisions I stumbled upon Aliveby Adelitas Way, which I consider Ashlyn and Zane’s unofficial theme song.

When the idea for Shadow Fire hit, it hit hard. One day I hadn’t written anything for several years and the next I cranked out the first chapter in a couple of hours. I was obsessed. There was no plot mapping, no outline. Zane, Ashlyn, and Taranis were in my mind, and I needed to free them as quickly as possible or risk insanity. The first draft was written in four weeks. That was two years ago. While the plot and characters remain the same, the manuscript has undergone numerous revisions to reach the place it is today. I changed the beginning twice, then finally found what I liked on the third try.

Shadow Fire is my debut novel. I learned so much about writing during this journey. You can clearly see it if you compare the first manuscript with the published novel. It’s an amazing difference. Fortunately, I love editing and revising. It’s hard to say goodbye to your characters when that final revision is complete. Ashlyn, Zane, and Taranis have a cameo in Stolen Moon the second book in the Light Chronicles due out in August.

Guest Post Third Daughter: Multicultural Steampunk by Susan Kaye Quinn

The Third Daughter of the Queen wants to marry for love, but rumors of a new flying weapon force her to accept a barbarian princeís proposal of a peace-brokering marriage.

Third Daughter: Multicultural Steampunk
by Susan Kaye Quinn

What is steampunk? Most people have a vague idea that steampunk stories, as a genre, “have steam power in them” and, as an aesthetic, steampunk looks something like 19th century Victorian England. From brass goggles to buttoned-up costumes, movies like Sherlock Holmes, books like Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan, and costumes from the tinkers and crafters DIY culture, all give us a feel for this British-centric steampunk.

But a closer look at the many cool steampunk books coming out today reveals stories and characters moving “Beyond Victoriana” into cultures that existed outside Britain in the 19th century… or even cultures that are entirely fantasy analogues of the ones existing at that time.

When I set out to write Third Daughter (set in an analog east-India that I call Steampunk Goes to Bollywood), I didn’t intend to write multicultural steampunk. I started with a princess named Aniri sneaking out to meet her lover Devesh in the fantasy country of Dharia. As I developed the characters and the plot, I quickly realized that all my characters were east-Indian, and that the three countries tangled up in political intrigues and saber-rattling were actually analogs for the East-West conflicts that can be found in modern India today, as well as the cultural conflicts felt by Indians who live outside of the subcontinent. Don’t ask me why, but my steampunk was flavored east-Indian from the start!

But as the story evolved, I found rich and deep cultural issues to mine for the conflicts in my novel. In my story, the supposedly “backward” country of Jungali represents the deep cultural identity of traditional India (my main character’s ideas about the backwardness of those traditions change throughout the story, and I hope, reflects the fond sentiments for at least some of those traditions). The second largest country of Samir represents the Western influence – in this case, the technological advancements of steampunk technology. And finally, the largest country, Dharia, is a picture of modern India – an, at times, uneasy integration of both the Western (steampunk) and Eastern (traditional) influences.

In Third Daughter, I took all these cultural influences, turned them upside down by creating a matriarchical ruling structure (where lineage goes through the Daughters of the Queen), and crafted a story that’s both romance and adventure. And I hope something fresh and new.

Steampunk is nothing if not wildly creative, and I love exploring this genre with a multicultural twist – so much so that I plan on writing at least two more novels in The Dharian Affairs Trilogy (Second Daughter and First Daughter). I hope you’ll give them a try!
