Same theme–different takes on it

17 Nov

When you put together creative minds something spectacular comes out: an anthology of wonderful stories meant to make you fall in love with fictional heroes and heroines. From as far as Henry the VIII’s regal court to modern day, from angels and demons to urban fantasy to alpha males and sassy women these short stories have as a common theme A great Big World’s song Say Something.

Some songs really touch my heart and Say Something is one of them. When I first heard it, it made me pause. The lyrics gave me goosebumps, almost like a cry of desperation and pain. Watching the video totally sealed the deal for me: I will one day write a story about it.

That day came sooner than I expected when I was invited to participate in the romance anthology called . . . Say Something, along with six other amazing authors. Its release day is fast approaching on December 1st, 2014 and I encourage you all to get a copy at only .99cents, for a limited time only. Find it on Amazon and B&N.

Say Something–The making of a story

10 Nov

FBbannerSometime in April of this year I found myself surrounded by a bunch of friends as creative as I am: authors. For a few days while at the Desert Rose Writers Conference we breathed, ate and drunk … writing and loved every bit of it.

“Guess what?” Morgan Kearns came one morning to give me a hug.

“What?” I returned the hug, then hugged Kris Tualla and Deena Remiel, one of my favorite trio in the writing world.

“We are gonna write short stories based on A Great Big World’s song ‘Say Something.’ Then release them as an anthology. Take over Amazon and all the charts. What do you think?” Morgan said, eyes sparkling.

“Oh, I looooooooove that song. That’s too cool!” I said, my mind already humming the song.

“You in?” Morgan continued.

I glanced from Morgan to Kris to Deena, not believing my ears. “Really? You want me in it?”

Morgan thumbed my shoulder. “Not you, your story, silly.”

I pretended to wipe my forehead. “Oh, geez, I was worried for a second there thinking you want me in it. That’s what you said, right?”

Morgan rolled her eyes while we all laughed. I was ecstatic about being included, but also honored they thought my writing was good enough to be part of such a project.

My Muse shadowed me for a few days afterward. I took advantage of her presence and went hard to work. I had started Oscar and Grace’s tale a few years ago but never finished it. Somehow their romance fitted the Say Something theme and so their story took off on its own.

Fast forward to present day. Oscar and Grace are ready to entertain you in the short story titled “Meant To Be” as part of the anthology called “Say Something.” The anthology will come out December 1st, at a super low price, only .99cents available on Amazon, B&N and Smashwords. But hurry up! After Jan. 1st 2015 the price will go up to $2.99.

And for those of you who aren’t familiar with A Great Big World’s video for “Say Something”, here it is. Enjoy!

The Inspiration for Shadow Fire

They say the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Well, I am a video game addict. More specifically, I’m addicted to RPGs. I spend an inordinate amount of time immersed in one fantasy world or another. My characters would be right at home alongside the characters from Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, or The Legend of Zelda. I label Shadow Fire as a fantasy romance, but it is also an adventure.

Music is a huge force in my inspiration for characters and plots. Certain songs just have an overall feel that transports me to the world I’m creating. The Wall by Kansas was a driving force behind the beginning chapters of Shadow Fire. Celtic music helped me picture the fantasy world I was going for—my favorite was The Mummers’ Dance by Loreena McKennitt. During revisions I stumbled upon Aliveby Adelitas Way, which I consider Ashlyn and Zane’s unofficial theme song.

When the idea for Shadow Fire hit, it hit hard. One day I hadn’t written anything for several years and the next I cranked out the first chapter in a couple of hours. I was obsessed. There was no plot mapping, no outline. Zane, Ashlyn, and Taranis were in my mind, and I needed to free them as quickly as possible or risk insanity. The first draft was written in four weeks. That was two years ago. While the plot and characters remain the same, the manuscript has undergone numerous revisions to reach the place it is today. I changed the beginning twice, then finally found what I liked on the third try.

Shadow Fire is my debut novel. I learned so much about writing during this journey. You can clearly see it if you compare the first manuscript with the published novel. It’s an amazing difference. Fortunately, I love editing and revising. It’s hard to say goodbye to your characters when that final revision is complete. Ashlyn, Zane, and Taranis have a cameo in Stolen Moon the second book in the Light Chronicles due out in August.

Amy Holman Edelman launched IndieReader, the essential consumer guide to self-published books and the people who write them, way back in 2007. Since then, indie authors have stormed the bestseller lists, been courted by trad publishers and (after all that), finally gained a modicum of respect.

Amy self-published her first book, The Fashion Resource Directory, back in the 80s, long before POD and Amazon and e-readers roamed the land. Her second and third books (The Little Black Dress and Manless in Montclair), were traditionally published (by Simon & Schuster and Shaye Areheart Books, an imprint of Crown).

As an author and a publicist with over 20 years’ experience, Amy’s goal for IndieReader is no less than to make indie a respected and desirable category within the publishing world. This book is just one step in that direction.

Excerpt

From the Introduction of Indie Authors Naked by Amy Edelman:

IndieReader was launched in ‘07, otherwise known as the dark days of self-publishing. Back then, every book was considered a vanity publication, every author a failed writer. Denial ran so high that when the self-pubbed book, Her Last Letter by Nancy C. Johnson hit The New York Times bestseller list, the good folks at the NYT were still saying that they’d never include one! And then there was The Shack, another indie that snuck through the gauntlet to appear on the NYTimes list for an astounding 172 weeks between June 2008 to early 2010 (52 of those weeks at #1).

Flash forward to 2012-2013. With the advent of ebooks, the publishing landscape has completely and irrevocably changed. Bowker, the ISBN people, recently reported that the number of self-published books in 2012 rose 59% over 2011, growing to over 391,000 titles in 2012. That’s a lot of indie.

But it’s not just availability that has changed the notion of what a self-pubbed book can be. Either the whole “vanity” thing was propaganda on the part of trad publishing—after all, Virginia Woolf famously did it with Hogarth Press—or publishing ebooks makes it easier for talented writers to get their work seen. Either way, over the last couple of years—beginning with the high-profile snagging of Amanda Hocking—at least 50 indie authors (many of them interviewed in this very book) have been courted and won by traditional publishers.

Did these authors’ books change from when they were self-pubbed to when they became trads? Or did their appearance on the bonafide bestseller lists (The New York Times, USA Today) just make it easier for the Big 5 to spot them? Not that getting picked up by a traditional publisher is always an indie author’s end-game. In fact, a recent survey conducted by The Bookseller noted that only about one-third of the self-published authors surveyed stated that they would consider a traditional book deal. That’s a lot of authors who aren’t willing to trade the freedom of creation for the chance to have their works packaged by committee.

So whether an author decides to sell their work to a trad publisher or not—it is clear that indies are here to stay. Their books resonate with readers who really couldn’t give a damn if they came through the hallowed halls of a traditional publisher or just via their ereaders. The indie writing community is strong and getting stronger, as are the options for placing their books (been to your local bookstore lately? You may be surprised at the titles you find on the shelves).

Yes, dear readers, this time—thanks to technology and changing perceptions—self-publishing is clearly here to stay. And via interviews and essays, Indie Authors Naked aims to highlight the best of the best.

EXCERPT

“Liberty . . .”

The mere mention of my name heightened the intensity between us. He didn’t finish his sentence, instead choosing to trace his finger down the side of my cheek. His hand trailed lower, over my shoulder, and down my back before returning to my hip. The action sent a pulsing shiver through me and I blushed. I couldn’t help it.

“I don’t know what I like more. Your smile, laugh, or how beautiful you look when you blush.” He caressed the side of my face again like he was unable to stop himself. “I catch myself saying things just to see if I can make your skin flush this pretty pink.” He brushed his fingers through the side of my hair, the gesture so tender that it sent another ripple of trembles through me.

“You shouldn’t say things like that, Oliver,” I murmured.

“Probably not, but I can’t help it. Maybe I am dangerous.” He moistened his lips and moved a fraction closer.

“Definitely.” The word was a faint whisper and I leaned in.

Oliver was going to kiss me. There was no doubt about it. I ignored the warning voice in my head that told me this was going too fast. I gave in to the moment, thinking of nothing but how incredible being kissed by the one person who had managed to turn my insides into a riot of emotions was going to feel.

“Tell me to stop.” His breath fanned across my lips.

phantom-coverDescription:

The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.

Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.

Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.

Excerpt:

The orchestra tuned for its virtuoso, and Justyn stood ready. But no one else was ready for the magical performance he began. Beside her, Carmen was rambling on about something mundane. Rebecca elbowed her to silence so she could listen to the perfectly thrilling tenor. As she listened to the song unfold, the world around her started to slip away. Gone was the high school auditorium. Gone were the rowdy teenagers. The Gothic stranger on the stage had become the embodiment of Erik, and Rebecca watched him in all his dark glory, belting out his tormented love through the words of his song. And she was as breathless with wonder as Christine herself must have been when the masked stranger serenaded her in the candlelit labyrinth of the opera house. In that moment, Justyn wasn’t just portraying the phantom. Justyn was the phantom.

“Let the music touch your soul.

Let the darkness make you whole.

Do not fear what is unknown.

Your true path has now been shown.

Listen to the words I sing.

Embrace the peace that night will bring.”

As he continued to sing in his deep but somehow angelic voice, Rebecca found that she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. With every line, her heart began to beat faster.  She truly felt the arms of night wrapping her in a warm embrace. She could almost feel the hands of the phantom glide along her body as the words poured forth. The music caressed her. It possessed her—mind, body and soul. Each word left her longing, yearning for more.

She was gawking so obviously, it was hardly surprising when Justyn felt her eyes on him and steadily met her gaze. She realized her mouth was hanging open in stunned awe, and she quickly snapped it shut. His lips moved into just a small hint of a smile. He never took his eyes off her while he sang the final verse, making her cheeks flush to the point that she felt almost feverish. But it wasn’t embarrassment but excitement, arousal even, which was sending her mind spinning in so many directions.

When the song was over, and Rebecca had recovered just a hint of her composure, she couldn’t help but burst into a healthy round of applause. A few scattered people joined in, including Debbie and Carmen after she nudged them in the ribs. But only Miss King seemed to truly appreciate the brilliance of his talent as much as Rebecca did.

“That was amazing, Justyn!” the teacher gushed.

“Lord Justyn,” he corrected as he stepped down from the stage.

A few others complimented him as well, but he took in all in stride. In fact, his serious expression never faltered as he stepped down from the stage. He seemed almost bored, like it was all he could do to hold back a yawn, despite the smiles and words of encouragement.

But not everyone in the crowd was pleased as Justyn glided down the aisle, so ethereal in his dark garments that he still resonated the spirit of the Opera Ghost. Miss King might have been excited about the newest male addition to her cast after being limited for many years, but Tom and his group of boisterous companions glared at him as he passed them by.  Jay sneered and tossed a balled up piece of paper in Justyn’s direction, but the Goth was quick, and caught it in his hand without missing a beat.

“I think you dropped something,” he said.

His speaking voice was no less melodic than his singing voice, but something about his tone made Rebecca shiver. He tossed the paper back at Jay, who was nowhere near as coordinated as Justyn. He practically fell off his seat in his efforts to catch it.

“Hey vampire,” Tom called when Justyn went to walk away. “Are you sure you can handle the competition?”

Justyn smiled, a cool, sarcastic half-smile, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you?”

Miss King didn’t notice the short confrontation, and Justyn vanished from the auditorium as quickly and mysteriously as he had appeared. Only Rebecca had noticed the very real tension between the two boys. She wondered if it was a bad omen for them to start off the production with hard feelings and envy. That could only lead to trouble. The kind of trouble that could end with someone getting hurt.  The kind of trouble that Rebecca would do whatever it took to avoid.
