Review–Angel in a Black Fedora by Sherry Gammon

4 Feb

Who knows me well enough knows that I do not reviews not even for author friends I know personally, unless I really like a story.

With that being cleared, I had to review Angel in a Black Fedora by Sherry Gammon.

Blurb: Ciel Björk died a tragic death…but she got over it. Now she works as an undercover angel, answering people’s prayers. She’s sent to the sleepy little town of Port Fare, New York to help turn Chloe’s dreams into reality. As secrets are revealed, Ciel soon learns that things are not as simple as they seem.

The short story is a YA clean romance and part of the anthology Of Love and Magic released February 1st. I read it over lunch break (the story, not the anthology) and had this sweet, warm, loving feeling afterward, which to me means the story touched me and anything getting an emotion out of me is darn good.

magic

The story follows a group of odd high schoolers, who at first don’t seem to belong together: Ciel, Cloe, Austin and Bridger. As with any teenagers the group is confronted with problems, from love to hate, from insecurity to pain and hurt. There were two twists I almost screamed when reading:

1. when Ciel tells Cloe who she is and her purpose; I thought she’ll keep that info concealed for as long as possible; obviously I was wrong.

2. when a favorite character from a different book of Sherry’s shows up unexpectedly.

Fast paced, characters you like in the beginning and end up falling in love with, twists, smiles and a few tears, Angel in a Black Fedora has it all. My only complain is that it ended too fast. There is plenty room to turn this into a series. I’ll be the first in line to buy it.

The competition was for girls between the ages of thirteen and seventeen, but it felt like Ericka, Tori, and I were the youngest ones there. I only saw a couple of girls from school, and the lineup looked more like something you’d see on a music video set. All the girls were gorgeous, and they had these curvy womanly bodies. I looked like a skinny little kid next to them. The first girl walked out, and I heard the judges say she “owned the runway,” and, “walked like a gazelle.” I was starting to feel ill. I wasn’t sure which way it was going to come, but I knew I had to find a bathroom — fast. I started to get out of line when Ericka grabbed my wrist.

“It’s almost time,” she said. A tiny bit of spit flew out of her mouth and hit my cheek.

I wasn’t sure why she was so intent on me going through with it, but she had a death grip on my arm, so I didn’t have much of a choice. Her number was called and she walked out to the stage. One of the other girls said she walked like a kid with sand bucket stilts on her feet, but she came back with a smirk on her face like she knew she’d get chosen.

“They said they had never seen such long legs,” she said.

Tori was next.

“She walks like a gorilla at feeding time,” said the girl behind me. I went next, and I tried to focus on not tripping over my feet. My mom’s pumps had a rubber sole on the bottom, which probably wasn’t the brightest idea seeing as my shoes were making squeaking noises as I walked. I was so nervous I couldn’t stop smiling as I walked. I looked like the plastic clown who blows up balloons with its mouth at the Pizza Palace. When I got to the end of the runway, I tried to cross my feet to turn like the other girls had, but I over rotated and ended up doing a full spin which made my kilt fan out and gave the mall walkers a view of my blue underpants. I tried to act like it was intentional and did an extra turn. One of the judges put her hand up to stop me, and I held my breath as she started to speak.

Imperfect Love

Imperfect Love

Lauren Wilson is well on her way to her happily-ever-after. She has a career she loves, a husband she adores and a baby on the way, but a devastating diagnosis changes everything. The life she’s built suddenly crumbles around her when her husband insists she choose—the baby or him.

Returning to her small hometown to rebuild her shattered life, Lauren crosses paths with Ethan Campbell, the man who stole her teenage heart. The old attraction is still there, but Lauren won’t admit it to anyone—least of all herself. Her only priority is providing a life for her child, and she can’t afford to get it wrong. Ethan is confusing everything, including stirring up feelings she’s not prepared to face. Will she spend her life raising her baby alone or is the family she’s always wanted finally within her reach?

EXCERPT

The next morning, Lauren awoke to the sound of the garage door closing. It was only six fifteen but Paul had already left for work. He didn’t even say goodbye. Did he really have to work so much? Was it her imagination or did he seem to be working more lately?

She pulled the covers up to her chin while thoughts circled her mind. Certainly, Paul wasn’t deliberately avoiding her, but if she had to hang onto this secret much longer, she’d explode. This was way too exciting to hold in. For a moment, she considered calling her mom and telling her, but decided Paul deserved to know before anyone else. Even her mom.

Lauren rose from bed and gazed out the window. Morning was just beginning to break, and the neighborhood was bathed in a serene, purple haze. She loved the early morning when so many possibilities lay ahead. And today those possibilities were almost intoxicating. Once Paul knew she was pregnant, he’d be so ecstatic. They’d spend more time together, and Lauren would finally have her perfect life—just as she had imagined it.

Pulling on her robe, Lauren headed toward the kitchen. After school she’d drive over to Paul’s office and kidnap him. She’d take him to a nearby park and after walking around, hand-in-hand, she’d present him with the baby bottle. The vision of his excitement was so real it almost felt as if his arms were already around her.

Today would be a good day.

A day that would change everything.
